Nickolas Warner of Papillion, Nebraska, has been named the 2019 Janie Moore Greene Grant recipient by the NANPA Foundation. He is a freshman beginning his undergraduate studies in photography at Arizona State University.
Warner’s interest in photography was sparked by a subscription to Zoobooks magazine he got for his 8th birthday and, later, the pages of National Geographic. The camouflaged animals of Southeast Asia fascinated him. When he went to Malaysian Borneo, he first got to visit some of the locations he’d been studying throughout his childhood in the pages of magazines. When he arrived, he was struck by the amount of deforestation going on and the deteriorating condition of the rainforests. The trip inspired him to hone his photography skills to help show the world not only the beauty of places and things that need protection, but also what happens when nature isn’t protected.
The Janie Moore Greene Grant is a $1,000 award given annually by the NANPA Foundation, through the generosity of Janie Moore Greene, to a student currently enrolled in, or who has been accepted to, an institution of higher education and will be specializing in the study of photography.
Previous grant recipients have done some amazing work! Recently, we got an update from 2015 Janie Moore Greene Grant awardee Michelle A. Butler, who is working with universities and non-profit organizations to preserve endangered plants in the desert areas of the American West and from 2016 awardee Jiayu Su who, in addition to participating in the 2019 NANPA Summit College Photography Scholarship Program, has moved to a new area that he and his camera are now exploring.
